As I begin writing this review, I am mindful of the superb original Ju-On ( irate that between 7-8 stars) and the original American versions of The Grudge (various films: 6-7 stars) and I try to compare this movie to the movies that came before it.
I knew something was wrong when I recently just saw trailers of this movie as of last week, indicating there was minimal marketing behind this movie effort.
This movie just focuses on the unexplained curse and its sloppy killings, and after that, the story goes downhill after one of the characters comes home from Japan.
Like the other reviews are saying, all the scary moments are just jumpscares. When I saw it tonight, the only thing that truly terrified me that when I went into the movie, I was fully awake and somewhat intrigued to see the film, but as the movie progress, I kept on nodding with boredom, even though some of the supposed jumpscares were supposed to make me afraid. Instead, I was frightened that I might actually fall asleep during a horror film.
Also, I kept on asking why is the story's setting set back in early 2000s, like are they trying to get the nostalgia of the original American versions? But then again, this story was a standalone, entirely set in America, and It had no relations to the previous films like Ju-On and The Grudge series. The only thing I did like was the flashbacks trying to explain what happened with the previous families within that cursed house. The main character, her son, and her supporting actor cop were largely forgettable, and the death scenes come off as unnecessary. Then nothing else about the film sets it apart from even the better terrors of the PG-13 originals or the even better Ju-On (sad for a new rated R 2020 film.
If the point of the movie was trying to make the Grudge curse to haunt the audience forever to see future Grudge movies, I'm afraid this movie would effectively end such viewings of this 2020's decade start.

After some questionable ventures, Studio Ghibli returns to its success formula: interesting stories rooted in Japanese folklore, featuring a young girl or woman in the beautiful countryside. Couldn't possibly go wrong with the oldest prose story that probably gave mount Fuji its name.
The animation is top notch, the acting is really good - the old man was delicious - and the story is both archetypal and heart breaking. There are some problems with the film though, one of them being the slow development that required more than two hours of film to unfold, as well as the rather uneventful and fractured ending.
The story is that of a magical child found in a bamboo stalk. It grows really fast turning into a beautiful girl. The bamboos also offer gold and beautiful clothes, so that the old country couple that found and raised her move her to the capital to turn her into a "proper lady. However the ridiculous restrictions and rigid customs bring nothing than unhappiness to the otherwise energetic and nature loving girl. In her desperation she mentally asks for help and she is taken back to the Moon, where she was originally from, to a place of spirits, light, but no life or emotions, only purity. So there were Nazis on the Moon after all, huh?
There are other Ghibli animations that I like more, most of them, in fact, but I feel like this film is a promise that they will return to stories focused or inspired from Japanese traditions, rather than go with stuff like The Borrowers. Why ruin a perfectly good system that brought them a huge and faithful fandom? It is also a beautiful moody story that speaks to the viewer of youth, life and the desire to be free, even against all the best wishes of the people around you. I recommend it.

Las pequeñas localidades rurales del partido de Tres Arroyos, al igual que la mayoría de los poblados similares de la República Argentina, surgieron y crecieron en torno a las estaciones del ferrocarril cuando éste se extendió por el territorio nacional debido a la necesidad de contar con un medio para transportar la producción de cada región al puerto de Buenos Aires.
La prosperidad de la economía Argentina de otros tiempos, basada en la importancia y el valor de los campos situados en zonas como Tres Arroyos, dio lugar a que los pueblos rurales tuvieran un desarrollo significativo. El aumento de su población estable y la creciente circulación de personas impulsó en su momento la instalación de servicios educativos básicos, la apertura de lugares para alojamiento, el nacimiento o la radicación de sucursales de cooperativas de productores agropecuarios, la llegada de servicios de primeros auxilios médicos, la construcción de viviendas y, en algunos lugares, hasta posibilitó la edificación de iglesias semejantes a las existentes en ciudades medianas y grandes.Sin embargo, los tiempos de bonanza sufrieron un primer golpe mortal cuando, a causa de la desidia que ha caracterizado a los gobernantes argentinos a lo largo de la historia, el sistema ferroviario, que estaba en manos del Estado, se tornó obsoleto y empezó a perder terreno frente al transporte carretero, el cual contaba con camiones con una mayor velocidad de traslado y buena capacidad de carga.
Esta situación crítica podría haber sido aprovechada para renovar una red vetusta y recuperar la competitividad perdida, pero, por el contrario, se convirtió en la excusa perfecta que hallaron los ineficaces dirigentes nacionales para justificar el abandono al que sometieron a los trenes y, más tarde, su posterior concesión al sector privado, la cual fue promocionada como la solución a todos los problemas pero en los hechos significó la desaparición definitiva del servicio en casi todo el país.
Al quedar virtualmente paralizada la red ferroviaria las personas que trabajaban o dependían de alguna forma de ésta fueron dejando paulatinamente las poblaciones rurales para trasladarse a centros urbanos y, en consecuencia, las construcciones pertenecientes al ferrocarril -galpones, salas de espera de pasajeros, boleterías, casas del personal, etc- quedaron abandonadas. El éxodo también dejó varias viviendas cerradas y a sus propietarios con pocas esperanzas de poder venderlas o alquilarlas, ya que nadie busca una casa en lugares donde desaparecen las oportunidades de emplearse y crece el aislamiento -las localidades rurales se encuentran alejadas varios kilómetros de las carreteras importantes y el tren también era la única vía de conexión directa con ciudades más grandes-.A pesar de la situación, los pobladores que tenían algún tipo de vínculo con las tareas campestres o que prestaban servicios al sector permanecieron en los pueblos. Pero el golpe de gracia vino a darlo la interminable (y no casual) crisis económica de nuestro país.
Poco a poco la producción agropecuaria se convirtió en un negocio de escasas o nulas ganancias para quienes no tuvieran una importante cantidad de tierras. Esto generó desempleo entre los obreros campesinos, produjo el cierre de cooperativas e hizo que un gran número de pequeños y medianos productores vendieran sus campos a grandes capitales o que los arrendaran bajo condiciones muy poco favorables. El resultado fue una nueva migración hacia la ciudad.Actualmente, las aldeas rurales sufren un creciente deterioro y la constante huída de sus habitantes. Sin embargo, no todo el mundo ha podido irse. Hay quienes permanecen en los pueblos porque saben que no tienen chances de reinsertarse en el sistema económico en los centros más poblados debido a que sólo conocen sobre tareas de campo, porque ya son demasiado mayores, o porque para poder marcharse deben vender o alquilar la vivienda que poseen, lo cual es imposible a causa del cuadro descripto.
Por otra parte, aún en su estado de dejadez, las localidades suelen recibir nuevos habitantes, aunque no todos se instalan en forma definitiva. En general, se trata de trabajadores que pierden sus empleos en el campo o de personas que escapan de la miseria y la marginalidad que padecen en las áreas urbanas. La mayor parte de ellos carece de vivienda e ingresos fijos, por lo que es común que ocupen las ruinosas construcciones del ferrocarril y las conviertan en su hogar.
Asimismo, existen pueblos en donde las edificaciones de clásico estilo inglés del antiguo Ferrocarril General Roca -nombre que tenía la desaparecida empresa estatal que operaba en la región sur del país- fueron parcial o totalmente recicladas y convertidas en capilla, biblioteca o lugar de recreación, todo ello merced a la buena voluntad y al esfuerzo que han puesto los pobladores para mejorar el aspecto del espacio donde viven. Sin embargo, son mayoría los lugares donde las mencionadas construcciones exhiben los despojos que produjeron el abandono, los temporales y la propia mano del hombre.
Al ver las fotografías que se adjuntan en Villa Rodríguez (Barrow), San Mayol, Claudio Molina, Lin Calel, La Sortija y Vásquez, las seis localidades rurales más pequeñas del partido de Tres Arroyos, que a su vez son representativas de muchas otras a lo largo y ancho del país, la idea era documentar el abandono que estas comarcas habían sufrido como consecuencia de lo mencionado.
Sin embargo, luego de haber visitado regularmente durante quince años los pueblos nombrados, advertí que en parte estaba equivocado en cuanto a su futuro. Hoy pienso que, si se continúan aplicando en Argentina políticas económicas que no alienten una distribución equitativa de las riquezas, éstos sitios proseguirán derruyéndose a causa de la desidia, pero ya no estoy tan seguro de que vayan a quedar despoblados, es muy probable que se transformen en asentamientos de gente marginada por quienes sostienen un sistema económico perverso, que ha convertido todo y a todos en material descartable.
