Onward Theatrical release poster Directed by Dan Scanlon Produced by Kori Rae Written by Dan Scanlon Jason Headley Keith Bunin Starring Tom Holland Chris Pratt Julia Louis-Dreyfus Octavia Spencer Music by Mychael Danna [1] Jeff Danna [1] Cinematography Sharon Calahan Adam Habib Edited by Catherine Apple [2] Production company Walt Disney Pictures Pixar Animation Studios Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Release date February 21, 2020 ( Berlinale) March 6, 2020 (United States) Running time 103 minutes [3] Country United States Language English Budget $100–200 million [4] Box office $68 million [5] Onward is a 2020 American computer-animated urban fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. The film is directed by Dan Scanlon, produced by Kori Rae from a screenplay written by Scanlon, Jason Headley and Keith Bunin, and stars the voices of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer. Set in a suburban fantasy world, the film follows two elf brothers who set out on a quest to find a spell that will bring back their deceased father. [6] The film premiered at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2020 and was released in the United States on March 6, 2020. It received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed $68 million worldwide. Plot In a world inhabited by mythical creatures, magic is commonplace and its wielders are greatly respected. However, due to the difficulty of mastering it as well as technological advances over the years, the use of magic eventually becomes all but forgotten. In a time equivalent to the modern day, two teenage elves live in the city of New Mushroomton: Ian Lightfoot, who lacks in self-confidence, and his older brother Barley, a passionate role-playing and historical fanatic who longs to go on a proper adventure. Their father Wilden died of a severe illness shortly before Ian's birth, leaving their mother Laurel to raise them. On Ian's sixteenth birthday, Laurel gives the brothers a gift from Wilden: a magical staff, a rare gem, and a letter describing a "visitation spell" that can resurrect Wilden for a single day. Barley attempts to cast the spell to no avail, but Ian succeeds in doing so later that night. Due to Barley's interference, only the lower half of Wilden's body is physically reformed before the gem disintegrates. Resolving to fix their mistake, the brothers leave on a quest to acquire another gem in order to reattempt the spell. Laurel finds the boys gone soon after and leaves to find them. Ian and Barley first visit the Manticore's Tavern, named for and run by a fearless adventurer who possesses a map to the gem. The tavern has become a mundane family restaurant and the Manticore, Corey, is its uptight manager. In an argument with the boys over the map, Corey realizes how boring her life has become and drives the customers away in a fit of rage, accidentally setting fire to the restaurant and the map. The brothers' only clue is a children's menu that suggests "Raven's Point" as a possible location of the gem. Laurel later arrives at the scene and befriends Corey, who calms down and agrees to help her. Corey warns her that the brothers' journey may lead to the awakening of a vicious beast (a fact she forgot to mention to the brothers), which can only be defeated by a special sword. They find it at a pawn shop, whose owner demands an exorbitant price after she learns of its nature. Corey paralyzes her with a sting, and she and Laurel steal the sword. As Ian and Barley travel out of New Mushroomton and into a mountainous area, they narrowly escape from the police and a motorcycle gang of pixies, relying on Ian's newly awakened spell-casting abilities and Barley's instinct for where the gem might be hidden. They discover that "Raven's Point" is a hint to follow the directions indicated by a series of bird statues. They descend underground, avoiding a series of traps, and follow a river to its end. Surfacing, they find themselves back in the city and across the street from their high school. Ian lashes out at Barley for leading them on a wild goose chase and walks away with Wilden. While alone with Wilden, Ian realizes that Barley has served as an effective father figure throughout his youth and their recent quest and returns to make amends. Barley notices a flower-shaped hole in a fountain and fills it with a rock he took from one of the bird statues, triggering the fountain to open and reveal the gem he and Ian need. When he takes it, though, the school rearranges itself into a giant stone dragon and attacks. Ian tries to fend it off with the staff, but it is knocked from his grip and into the ocean; he manages to reform it from a splinter embedded in his hand and continues the fight. Corey flies in carrying Laurel, who plunges the magic sword into the dragon's heart and weakens it long enough for Ian to cast the visitation spell and fully reform Wilden's body. Ian sends Barley ahead to spend time with Wilden before the spell wears off, and he holds off the dragon long enough for Laurel to destroy it. Afterward, Barley tells Ian that Wilden is proud of him and the brothers share a hug. Even though Ian has given up a chance to see his father face to face, he is content with the time the two spent together on the journey. His confidence and spell-casting improve, and he surprises Barley by painting his new van, which Barley bought to replace the one he deliberately destroyed in the mountains to fend off the police. Corey reopens the Manticore's Tavern in its original spirit, drawing in customers with tales of her past adventures, and the citizens of New Mushroomton begin to reclaim their magical heritage. Voice cast Tom Holland as Ian Lightfoot, [7] [8] a teenaged elf who is Barley's brother and Laurel and Wilden's son. Chris Pratt as Barley Lightfoot, [7] [8] Ian's brother, and Laurel and Wilden's son who longs for a magical quest. Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Laurel Lightfoot, [7] [8] [9] the widowed mother of Ian and Barley. Octavia Spencer as Corey, a manticore restaurant owner who Ian and Barley go to for help on their quest. Mel Rodriguez as Colt Bronco, a centaur police officer and Laurel's new boyfriend. [10] Kyle Bornheimer as Wilden Lightfoot, Ian and Barley's late father and Laurel's late husband. [11] Lena Waithe as Specter, a cyclops police officer. [10] [12] [13] Ali Wong as Gore, a faun police officer. [10] Grey Griffin as Dewdrop, a pixie and the leader of the Pixie Dusters biker gang. Tracey Ullman as Grecklin, a pawn shop owner. [11] Wilmer Valderrama as Gaxton, a college friend of Wilden. [11] George Psarras as Avel, a cop. [11] John Ratzenberger as Fenwick, a construction worker. [11] Production Development In July 2017, Pixar announced a "suburban fantasy world" film at the D23 Expo, with Scanlon directing and Rae producing. [6] The film's inspired by Scanlon's father's death when Scanlon and his brother were younger, and their relationship. He decided to write the story after hearing an audio clip of his father. [14] On December 12, 2018, the title was revealed. [15] In 2019, Headley and Bunin were hired to rewrite the screenplay. Casting On December 12, 2018, Holland, Pratt, Louis-Dreyfus and Spencer were announced as starring in the film. [16] While having recorded most of their lines separately, Holland and Pratt did some of their recording sessions together since, according to Scanlon, "they've worked together before and hung out together". [17] According to Rae, Holland and Pratt improvised some of their lines while recording together. [18] On December 17, 2019, Wong, Waithe and Rodriguez joined the cast of the film. [10] On February 18, 2020, Valderrama, Ullman, Bornheimer, Psarras and Ratzenberger were revealed to have been cast on the film. [11] Music On April 16, 2019, Mychael and Jeff Danna were revealed to be the film's composers. [1] On February 12, 2020, Brandi Carlile revealed she recorded the song "Carried Me With You" for the film's end credits. She co-wrote it with Phil and Tim Hanseroth. [19] The film's soundtrack was released on February 28, 2020. [19] All music is composed by the Dannas, except where noted. [7] On February 27, 2020, it was announced that the film included a new short-film titled Playdate with Destiny. The short-film stars Maggie Simpson of The Simpsons. [21] [22] Marketing On May 29, 2019, two stills from the film, featuring Barley, Ian and their mother, were revealed. The following day, the film's teaser poster was released, and the teaser trailer debuted during ABC 's broadcast of the 2019 NBA Finals. [23] The trailer was also shown with Toy Story 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home. An official trailer was released on October 10, 2019. Another trailer was released on December 17, 2019. Lawsuit On January 27, 2020, a San Francisco tattoo artist named Sweet Cecily Daniher filed a copyright lawsuit against Disney, Pixar, and Onward producer Kori Rae. In September 2018, Pixar rented a van owned by Daniher and decorated with a unicorn-themed mural for use in a one-day festival. She learned about the production of Onward in May 2019 and, after seeing images of the van used by Ian and Barley Lightfoot in the film, came to believe that Pixar had stolen the design of her van in violation of her rental agreement with the company, and violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Visual Artists Rights Act, and California Artists Protection Act. She also sought in her suit to prohibit distribution of the film and any infringing advertisements or merchandise. [24] Reception Box office As of March 8, 2020, Onward has grossed $40 million in the United States and Canada, and $28 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $68 million. [5] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Way Back and the wide expansion of Emma, and was projected to gross $45–50 million from 4, 200 theaters in its opening weekend. [25] The film held early advance screenings on February 29, and made $650, 000 from 470 theaters. [26] It then made $12. 1 million on its first day, including $2 million from Thursday night previews. The film went on to debut to $40 million, topping the box office but marking the third-ever lowest start for a Pixar film. [27] [4] Critical response On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 86% based on 224 reviews, with an average rating of 7. 12/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "It may suffer in comparison to Pixar's classics, but Onward makes effective use of the studio's formula -- and stands on its own merits as a funny, heartwarming, dazzlingly animated adventure. " [28] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 61 out of 100, based on 54 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [29] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale (tied with Cars 2 for the lowest score received by a Pixar film), and PostTrak reported filmgoers gave it 4. 5 out of 5 stars. [27] Ban and censorship The film was banned in the Arab countries of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, as one female cyclops police officer character in the film named Specter (voiced by Lena Waithe) briefly indicates that she is a lesbian. The scene in question is a brief scene in which a centaur police officer character named Colt Bronco is lamenting about how Ian and Barley Lightfoot do not respect him as a father figure. Specter then replies to him by saying, "It's not easy being a new parent—my girlfriend's daughter got me pulling my hair out, okay? " [30] [31] [32] Homosexual acts are criminalized in these four aforementioned countries, which are predominantly Muslim, although Kuwait does not criminalize female homosexual acts. However, this ban is not universal, and the film has been screened in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Egypt. In Russia, where the gay propaganda law officially criminalizes the dissemination of LGBT-related content to minors under 18, the Russian dub, handled by Disney Character Voices International, changed the line to "It's not easy being a new parent—my partner's daughter got me pulling my hair out, okay? " instead. The Russian dub also avoided referring to Specter with gender-specific pronouns as well. Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there. “The story is inspired by my own relationship with my brother and our connection with our dad who passed away when I was about a year old, ” says director Dan Scanlon. “He’s always been a mystery to us. A family member sent us a tape recording of him saying just two words: ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye. ’ Two words. But to my brother and me—it was magic. “That was the jumping-off point, ” continues Scanlon. “We’ve all lost someone, and if we could spend one more day with them—what an exciting opportunity that would be. We knew that if we wanted to tell that story that we’d have to set the movie in a world where you could have that incredible opportunity. ” Ian Lightfoot Ian a newly 16-year-old elf, yearns for the father he lost back before he was born. Ian is sweet and determined with the best of intentions, but his lack of confidence and nervous energy trips him up more often than not. Ian is convinced that if only he had his father’s guidance, his life wouldn’t be so complicated and messy. “Ian is the everyman, ” says Scanlon. “He’s a little introverted like I am. He’s a logical kid, practical. He understands the world he lives in and just wants to fit into that world—especially at age 16. He doesn’t want to change the world. He’d rather go unnoticed. ” His father’s unexpected gift on his birthday sets into motion the quest of a lifetime—but Ian’s not sure if his fantasy-obsessed, mortifyingly immodest brother Barley can get them where they need to go. According to Scanlon, while Ian is the one with the ability to perform magic, it's Barley who understands how it all works. “Ian finally realizes he can perform the spell his dad left them, but he’s not good enough to finish it. Barley tries to help, but Ian fears Barley’s help will only make things worse. ” Scanlon says that magic is a big part of the story—but that there’s more to it than spells and spectacle. “Magic is a metaphor for their potential. In order to do magic, you have to take risks. You have to believe in yourself. You have to trust yourself. You have to listen. No matter what magic Ian does, he always has to be challenged in a way that allows him to grow. ” Tom Holland provides the voice of Ian. “Tom has an infectious charm and sincerity that makes you root for him in every character he plays, ” says Scanlon. Barley Lightfoot Barley is a big, burly and boisterous 19-year-old elf who loves magic and immerses himself in role-playing fantasy game play. He’s a free spirit who may be slightly more passionate about the past than the present—and he’ll fight to the death, so to speak, to preserve historical landmarks. But because he's so focused on the past, he struggles to find success in the present. Says head of story Kelsey Mann, “Barley is way more focused on leveling up his character in Quests of Yore than he is in his own life. Barley’s character may be able to slay any beast in the game, but in real life he struggles to hold down a job. " When their late father inadvertently sends them on an epic quest together—one highlighted by mystery and magic—Barley fires up his beloved and mostly dependable van Guinevere and never looks back. “Barley has been preparing for this moment his whole life, ” says producer Kori Rae. “And he’s confident—maybe a little too confident—that he can deliver. ” Chris Pratt voices Barley. “Chris brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character, ” says Rae. Laurel Lightfoot (Mom) Laurel Lightfoot is a hardworking, sardonic and devoted single mom who throws herself whole-heartedly into everything she does. Laurel lost her husband years ago, but her drive and determination helped her overcome the hardship and make the most of her life with her much-loved sons, Ian and Barley. “Her true gift is that she’s amazing at mothering each son—and they’re as different as they can be—in the way they need to be mothered, ” says Rae. “She can be tough and crazy like Barley, and still be sensitive and subdued with Ian. ” According to characters supervisor Jeremie Talbot, Laurel’s connection to her sons is reflected in her appearance. “She has a little bit of Ian in her and a little bit of Barley, too. As all three characters evolved, it was like a dance to keep it all balanced. ” When the boys embark on a potentially dangerous adventure, Laurel will do anything to protect them—even if that means taking off on her own precarious journey. Julia Louis-Dreyfus lends her voice to Laurel. “There is no one funnier than Julia, ” says Scanlon, “but she also brings a warmth and loving side to her character. ” Wilden Lightfoot (Dad) Wilden Lightfoot is the late father of Barley and Ian. A smart, confident and determined man, Dad discovered a creative, albeit fantastic way to reconnect with his sons long after his passing. An ancient staff and magical spell reveal Dad’s plan that allows Ian and Barley to conjure him for 24 hours. But magic, it turns out, is far from a perfect science and the boys are only able to bring back half of their dad, the bottom half, on first pass. That half joins them on a quest to retrieve a Phoenix Gem in an effort to fully conjure Dad before time runs out. Says Scanlon, “We kept asking, ‘How can we give these brothers a glimpse of Dad without actually meeting him right away? ’ That’s where the idea of creating half a dad came from. It was like that message I got on tape from my dad—it’s just a little taste of that person, and it makes you want more. ” The Manticore (Corey) The Manticore is at least a thousand years old, but that’s just middle-aged for her species. Part lion, part bat and part scorpion, the Manticore was once a fearless warrior and proprietor of a dark and mysterious tavern that served as a waystation for travelers embarking on epic quests. But as modern conveniences replaced magic and any need for quests, the Manticore tapped her practical side, transforming her tavern into a family-friendly restaurant with family-friendly games and fried foods aplenty. She may not realize it, but her adventurous spirit still lurks within. According to Rae, Barley and Ian go to see the Manticore in order to get a map that will lead them to the Phoenix Gem—a second gem that will allow them to complete the spell to bring their dad back. “Barley knows all about the Manticore by playing the historically based fantasy game Quests of Yore, ” she says. “So they’re expecting to find this amazing warrior, but instead they meet Corey, a hard-working, stressed-out restaurant owner. ” Octavia Spencer was called on to help bring the Manticore to life. “Octavia can do it all, ” said Rae. “We’re especially excited about the depth as well as humor that she brings to her character. ” Officer Colt Bronco Colt follows the rules and sincerely expects those around him to respect authority like he does. Half horse and half man, Colt is strong and commanding, but unaware of the destruction he typically leaves in his full-bodied wake. He treasures his relationship with Laurel Lightfoot, and earnestly wants to connect with her two sons, Ian and Barley. “Colt is a cop, but he has a soft underbelly, ” says Rae. “He’s a standup guy. ” But teenagers that they are, the boys aren’t exactly jumping at the opportunity to bond with him. “Just having an adult man in their house on a regular basis isn’t something they’ve ever experienced, ” says Scanlon. Mel Rodriguez was cast to voice Colt Bronco. “We knew we needed someone who could give Colt a militaristic bravado but be super sweet on the inside, ” says Rae. “Mel can say stern things, but the sweetness comes through in his vocal quality. ” Guinevere Guinevere is more than just a van—she’s Barley’s mighty steed! Built from the ground up by Barley himself, the groovy purple van is a bit rundown, but spectacularly decked her out with crescent moon windows and a Pegasus mural. So, of course Barley calls on Guinevere to shepherd them on their epic quest. “He built her without a manual or really any automotive knowledge, ” says Scanlon. “And the end result reflects that. ” Blazey Blazey is the Lightfoots’ pet dragon. Friendly and more than a little hyperactive, she can wreak havoc with just a wag of her tail or a spark of her fire breath. “The original, fire-breathing dragons among the knights evolved into domesticated house pets, ” says Talbot. “Blazey is almost like a snake with legs and wings. She has a giant tongue and pants like a dog. ” Unicorns Unicorns aren’t the graceful and majestic creatures they once were. The dumpster-diving vermin of New Mushroomton are often seen eating garbage and hissing at anyone who poses a threat to their stinky stash. Familiar Fantasy “In many ways, it’s a story about rebalancing, ” says director Dan Scanlon. “Usually fantasy films take place long ago in a very noble time in a very beautiful land. There was something unique about seeing these characters in a world that’s familiar to us. It’s fun to imagine them riding skateboards, taking the bus, watching TV or playing video games. It’s something we haven't seen before—it’s such a juxtaposition watching an elf have to take his kid to soccer practice. ” Trust Bridge Among the locations the brothers encounter on their quest is an old drawbridge, which marks a pivotal point in their journey. “This scene is really the moment when we move from the familiar into the full fantasy world, ” says Klocek. Artists placed the rising sun and soft clouds in the sky on one side of an expansive, bottomless pit. Imposing mountains and dark clouds can be seen on the other side. The pit, says Klocek, is “big and foreboding. ” Ian is charged with pulling off his biggest spell yet to cross the massive crevasse with nothing but his own faith beneath his feet. “It comes at a crucial point in the film, ” says producer Kori Rae. “Ian is put to the test—not only to face his fears, summon courage he’s not sure he has and step out over a bottomless pit—but to trust his brother like never before. It’s a terrifying scene to watch—especially if you’re afraid of heights, and honestly, even if you’re not. ” Homes The décor inside the homes is mostly familiar—with some notable exceptions. The shape of the interior had to match the exterior, so artists studied cob houses—organic structures using ancient building techniques—that had similar shapes to those in New Mushroomton. Details within the home embraced the fantasy backdrop, too. For example, the backsplash and door handles in the Lightfoot home have an elf design. Suburbia According to production designer Noah Klocek, filmmakers spent a lot of time defining what a modern fantasy setting might look like. “While it’s a fantasy movie, it’s not about being a fantasy movie, ” he says. “It’s a story of these two brothers and the journey they go on, ” he says. “Where we landed is that it’s the fantastic and the familiar—it’s the balance of those things. ”Filmmakers were inspired by the Los Angeles region, ultimately deciding to locate their fantasy suburb in a fictional location similar to the area. “It’s like Los Feliz of maybe 20 years ago, ” says Klocek. “We also looked at Frogtown near L. A. and suburbs of Sacramento, too. ” According to the production designer, they set a target ratio with regard to the familiar and fantastic elements. “It’s almost frame by frame, ” he says. “The ratio we came up with is 70/30—70 percent familiar and 30 percent fantasy. It doesn’t work in every situation, and we discovered early on that sometimes the characters would tip that scale. ” Indeed, a world populated by elves, gnomes, trolls and the like might feel more fantastic. “The characters easily met that 30-percent fantasy threshold, ” says Klocek. “So almost everything else had to be familiar. But if there were no characters in a shot, we felt we could introduce something like a mushroom-shaped house. ” They balanced the unusual shape with familiar suburban details like California ranch-style siding, awnings, lawns, mailboxes and telephone poles. “The only thing that screams fantasy is the giant mushroom, ” says Klocek. “The idea is that a developer planted them 15 years ago and built houses into them. ” DIRECTED BY Dan Scanlon PRODUCED BY Kori Rae, p. g. a. We think this movie stands out for: A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. Not intended as educational, but does teach about role-playing games and medieval fantasy worlds. Promotes brotherhood, teamwork, perseverance, communication, resilience. Ian and Barley's relationship must overcome differences of opinion and disagreements. Encourages sometimes taking risks, believing in yourself, learning when to be assertive and fierce, acknowledging magic of family love, adventure, trying new things. Suggests that overreliance on technology removes some of the wonder and magic from life. Positive Role Models & Representations Ian is a smart, thoughtful teen who wants, more than anything, to spend time with the father he never knew. Barley is a dedicated, caring, protective older brother who encourages Ian to discover his powers, defends him from dangerous situations. They're both courageous, perseverant. Ian learns to take more risks, while Barley learns value of teamwork, accountability. Their mom, Laurel, is strong, brave, wants the best for her sons, willingly puts herself in dangerous situations to try to help/save them. Even through lens of this being a fantasy world, supporting characters are diverse -- many skin colors, body sizes/types, etc. Story centers around main characters' deceased father (who died of unspecified illness) coming back to life for one day. Parental death, a common element of children's films, can be upsetting to some viewers. The boys' dad does come back, but only from waist down. His half-body might initially scare really young kids, but it becomes a funny and bittersweet situation. Both Barley and Ian experience sad moments. A climactic fight sequence involves a giant, fire-breathing flying monster that destroys everything in its path, endangers several characters. But ( spoiler alert) no one dies or is seriously hurt except for the father (who was already dead). Some peril/tension and creepy settings, including sequence with skeletons, flying arrows, attack by deadly gelatinous cube. The brothers literally choose the Path of Peril at one point. Chase scene in which motorcycle-riding pixies pursue the brothers, sometimes wielding weapons (like a broken-off glass bottle, a mace). Pixies jump on Ian as he tries to drive; van ends up crashing. Characters use a sword. Ian nearly has a fatal fall. Cory the Manticore wrecks her restaurant when she loses her temper, destroying things, spewing fire. A character paralyzes a pawnbroker. Yelling, accusations, arguments. Laurel and her boyfriend, a centaur, are occasionally affectionate. They flirt a little, kiss once, and hug. A ringtone is clearly romantic. Another character mentions her girlfriend. Occasional insult language like "screw up, " "lazy, " "weirdo, " "nut, " "bonkers, " and "beast, " as well as a couple of dangling exclamations like "what the..., " "son of a..., " and "dang. " Nothing in the film, but all Disney/Pixar films have off-screen merchandise tie-ins, including apparel, toys, and more. Some real-life products have parody versions in the movie, like a game called Prance Prance Revolution. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking A character becomes more and more caffeinated -- excitable, jittery, and fast-talking -- after consuming energy drinks. Stay up to date on new reviews. Pixar's fantasy adventure ONWARD takes place in a fantasy world in which elves, trolls, centaurs, minotaurs, and other creatures co-exist in a traditional suburban setting. Technology has replaced magic in most folks' lives (turns out it's easier to flip a switch than cast a spell), but on his 16th birthday, introverted Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) receives a once-in-a-lifetime gift from his mom ( Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Ian's long-dead father has left him and his older brother, Barley ( Chris Pratt), a wizard's staff and a magical spell that will bring their dad back to life for one day. But when something goes wrong and only his bottom half appears, the Lightfoot brothers embark on a quest to find a way to complete the enchantment and spend time with their father before time runs out. Is it any good? Onward is a crowd-pleasing and surprisingly moving adventure. There's a novelty akin to that of Zootopia in seeing non-human characters inhabit a familiar, human-like suburban universe. In the world of Onward, feral unicorns eat trash like raccoons, dragons can be pets, and a millennia-old manticore ( Octavia Spencer) runs a Medieval Times-meets-Chuck E. Cheese novelty restaurant. Holland and Pratt do a winning job as brothers who are opposites but still close. Pratt's Barley is particularly charming: He's an exuberant, role-playing game aficionado who believes deeply in the magic left in their world. Holland's Ian is a lot like his Peter Parker: earnest and reluctant to embrace the powers he exhibits. And Louis-Dreyfus is an ideal pick as a comedic but courageous mom who won't stop until she's protected her sons. The first non-sequel Pixar movie since 2017's Coco, Onward is a heartfelt movie that, like Coco, deals with loss and death in an accessible way. Although the fantasy-adventure plot is fairly straightforward, the story may make even adults (especially those who've lost a parent) shed some tears. The emotional beats aren't quite as tear-jerking as they were in Coco, but Onward is still incredibly poignant. Who wouldn't be willing to do anything and everything to spend one day with a lost loved one? Viewers who value sibling tales will appreciate that the two leads are brothers who must overcome various challenges, take care of their (half-) father, and protect each other again and again. Onward may not top a list of Pixar's best-of-the-best, but it's sweet and optimistic and a reminder that everyone could use a little more magic in their lives. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the potentially sad elements of Onward. Why do you think so many kid-targeted movies involve dead parents? What's the impact on young viewers of movies about death, grief, and loss? Do you think watching movies about those things can help kids learn to grapple with them in real life? How is teamwork important to the story? What about perseverance and courage? Why are those important character strengths for kids to learn? Discuss the movie's themes of brotherhood, mourning/loss, overcoming hardship, and reconnecting with your inner self. Why is it important that some of the characters reclaim their natures? Have you watched or read other stories about quests? What does Onward have in common with them? What sets it apart? Why do you think quest stories are so popular? Do you think the movie is trying to make a point about technology use and digital well-being? What role does technology play in the characters' lives? How about magic? The KineRAW is a Chinese digital cinema camera that I called (perhaps too harshly) a "knockoff" of the ARRI ALEXA and RED cameras. This is a guest post by Wentao Marvin. As China is celebrating the Lunar New Year (the Year of Dragon), Kinefinity KineRAW development has entered the final stage of internal user testing, and public testing is scheduled to roll out in February. This update focuses on the S35 (Super35-sized sensor) and S8 (Super8mm-sized sensor) model as they are being developed back-to-back. Here are some images showing the S35 camera body design: A few key specifications of the S35 model: Super 35mm sized CMOS sensor Dual raw recording, uncompressed 12bit linear cinemaDNG (800Mbps) or 10bit log90 GoPro Cineform RAW (100Mbps), uses regular 2. 5 inch SSD or HDD (shoot and dump) DCI 2K 1-24fps, 1080p 1-30fps, 720p 1-60fps. (Not yet finalised) Interchangeable lens mount, supports PL (standard), Canon EF, Nikon F, OCT-19 PL mount version 280mm*135mm*155mm, approx. 4kg. I've been told that the dynamic range of the sensor is likely to achieve or exceed 13 stops. However the S35 model is still being fine-tuned, the actual footage is estimated to be released in mid Februrary. Here is the latest information on the camera, in the form of Q&A: FAQ Q: Why there are HDMI and VF sockets on the front of the camera? A: They are intended for compact monitors or EVF, two SDI output on the back are for reference monitors. Q: What is the function of that antenna? A: It will be used for remote control (eg. smart phones or tablets), also a wireless monitoring feature is being considered. Q: How many recording buttons are there on the body? A: One on the left, one on the back, one remote trigger socket on the front. Q: What power supply can I use? A: the S35 model uses 4 pin XLR, supports standard 14v battery, a 140Wh battery can last approximately 4 hours. Q: How many accessory mounting options are there on the body? A: There are two 1/4-20 mounting screws on the left and right side respectively, one 3/8-16 screw and 3 rows of four 1/4-20 screws on the top. Q: It was mentioned that the S35 model will have an EF mount version, is the aperture electronically controlled? A: Currently the sample unit cannot electronically control the aperture of EF lenses, however it's still being developed and might be able to do that upon release. Q: Does this camera have Genlock? A: It doesn't have Genlock but it will feature a special interface for 3D or multicam sync. Q: How much is the S35 model? A: Approximately $8000 USD body only. The S8 model shares most of the key features of the S35 model, two test video and some uncompressed frames can be viewed below, please note that these footage do not represent the actual quality of the S8 model since it's still a sample unit. You can download high quality files of each test here and here. Sample uncompressed 1080p frame grabs(processed from 2. 5k cinemaDNG) can be found here: 1, 2, 3, 4. I will provide Koo with more footage as soon as more is available, please stay tuned!

Thank you William Nicholson for saving my Dinard Film Festival 2019. After viewing several so un-innovative "real stories" Red Joan, Fisherman's Friends) and "social realism" films (The Last Tree, VS - even though VS's world of rap battles was fascinating) I was getting really disappointed in British cinema.
Hope Gap made up for all that. It is beautifully acted (Annette Bening is extraordinary) deep and subtle, and does carry you away. Woahh man! This is hugee🙌🏻🙌🏻❤. But not anymore? What is this? A Telltale Game.

It's been a few months since we got official word on the shipping status of the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, with the last update mentioning that it might be 3-4 weeks before they would be shipping. I wrote then that I didn't really expect them to be in anyone's hands in that amount of time, and while that has been the case, we may not see anything until 2014. There has been some speculation that they may be using the CMOSIS 4K sensor, and if that's true, the company is introducing an upgraded version with significant frame rate improvements that would make for a truly powerful camera. Here is CMOSIS on the new 4K sensor ( thanks to Cinescopophilia for the heads up): Outstanding in CMOSIS' portfolio is the newly upgraded version of the proven CMV 12000, which was first announced in 2010.. The current version of the CMV12000 offering 150 fps is in full volume production. The new version operates at an unparalleled frame rate of 300 fps. Volume production will ramp up towards the end of second quarter of 2014. Engineering samples will be available for purchase in February of the same year. CMOSIS' CMV12000 targets a broad range of demanding applications in the areas of process automation and motion control, the rapidly developing 4K HD TV broadcasting environment, as well as vision-supported traffic management systems. These applications require high frame rates and a broad dynamic range to capture fast moving events, often under unfavourable lighting conditions. The 12-Megapixel image sensor CMV12000, featuring a high dynamic range coupled with its global shutter operation, is excellently suited for such demanding situations. CMV12000 offers 8, 10 and 12 bit resolution. The 300 full frames of 4, 096 x 3, 072 pixels per second is offered in 10 bit mode. We already know the current sensor in the Blackmagic Product Camera 4K is limited to 30fps (as is the Cinema Camera and Pocket Cinema Camera), but if it is indeed using the previous version of this CMV12000 sensor, it is capable of much, much more. With how many relatively inexpensive 4K cameras are likely going to be out over the next 12 months, the Production camera is going to have a lot more company very soon -- even if none of those new cameras can do RAW or ProRes. There will also not likely be any global shutter CMOS sensors among the new lower-cost cameras. That means Blackmagic will still have an edge in many areas compared to what comes out, but at what cost? Something Blackmagic has been able to do that has surprised the industry is introduce high-performing cameras very inexpensively. Unfortunately, none of these products have been released on-time, and I'm sure at least some part of that is due to trying to keep costs so low. When the 4K camera is released, it will probably still have the bare minimum of features just as the others have had upon release. Firmware upgrades are fine, but I actually think higher frame rates would put this camera in another league entirely, something that literally no one would be able to match for the price. So I pose the question to you guys. If Blackmagic were able to work out the hardware and make it work, would you prefer a 300fps camera for a similar price released next summer, instead of the current 4K 30fps camera released in the next 2-3 months? I'm sure this is something Blackmagic will look at in a future version of the camera, but I'm curious to know what everyone would be looking for in a camera. Since the Apertus 4K camera project is using the current CMV12000, it will be interesting if they eventually switch to the upgraded model and have even higher frame rates. Either way, the Blackmagic site lists Q4 as the shipping date for the 4K camera, so we should be getting some official word soon from the company on the status. The megapixel race is certainly not "unnecessary". Consistently throughout the last decade, progress has been made on the megapixel front while consistently increasing image quality. The anecdotal adages would have you thinking that was impossible, but there are quite a few technological and fabrication improvements that have made lower noise, greater signal-to-noise ratio, and increased dynamic range possible despite shrinking pixel areas. I think the advent of the 36. 3mp Sony Exmor sensor currently used in the Nikon D800 is an exquisite example of what low-level technological improvements can do to lower noise and increase dynamic while still allowing significant increases in image resolution. As such, I think the D800 is a superb example of why the megapixel race is most definitely not over by any means. As for whether it is just bragging rights? I doubt it. Better tools can always be used effectively in the hands of a skilled artisan. Higher resolution and more low-ISO dynamic range have some specific high value use cases. Namely, landscape photography and some forms of studio photography. The D800 is in a very unique spot, offering near-medium format image quality in a package approximately 1/10th the cost. For some studios, there is no substitute for the best, and they will use $40, 000 digital medium format cameras as a matter of providing the right perception to their customers. For many other studios, however, and for many landscape photographers, the D800 is a dream come true: loads of megapixels AND high dynamic range. No, the megapixel race is most definitely not over, and it is certainly not unnecessary. Competition on all fronts produces progress on all fronts, and that is only ever a good thing for the consumer. Potential for Improvement To go a little deeper than my conclusions above, there is more to the story than simply that competition on all fronts is good. Technologically, physically, and practically, there are limitations that will indeed restrict the potential gains as we continue to increase sensor pixel counts. Once we have reached those limits, useful gains at reasonable cost will have to be made elsewhere. Two areas where that can occur would be optics and software. Technological Limitations Technologically, there are distinct limits to how much you can improve IQ. The primary source of image degradation in sensors is noise, and there are a variety of electronically introduced forms of noise that can be controlled. I think Sony, with their Exmor sensors, is very near to reaching technological limits, if they have not already. They have utilized a variety of patents to reduce sources of noise production at a hardware level directly in their sensors. Key sources of controllable noise are dark current noise, read noise, pattern noise, non-uniformity noise, conversion (or quantization) noise, and thermal noise. Both Sony and Canon use CDS, or correlated double-sampling, to reduce dark current noise. Sony's approach is a touch more efficient, but both use essentially the same approach. Read noise is a byproduct of amplification due to fluctuations in current through the circuit. There are a variety of patented and experimental approaches to detecting voltage variation in a circuit, and correcting it during amplification, to produce a "more pure, accurate" read result. Sony uses a patented approach of their own in Exmor sensors, including the 36. 3mp one used in the D800. The other two types of pre-conversion electronic noise are pattern noise and non-uniformity noise. These are the result of discontinuities in circuit response and efficiency. Pattern noise is a fixed aspect of each of the transistors used to construct a single sensor pixel and the electronic gates used to initiate read and signal flush. At a quantum level it is near impossible to make every single transistor exactly identical to each other, and this produces a fixed pattern of horizontal and vertical lines in sensor noise. Generally speaking, pattern noise is a minor contributor to overall noise, and is only really a problem in very low SNR regions or during very long exposures. Pattern noise can be relatively easy to remove given you approach the problem correctly. A "dark frame" can be constructed by averaging multiple samples together to create a pattern-noise template that can be differenced with a color frame to remove pattern noise. This is essentially how long-exposure noise removal works, and it is also how one can manually remove fixed pattern noise from long exposures. At a hardware level, fixed pattern noise can be mitigated by burning in a template that reverses the effects of FPN such that the differences can be added/subtracted at read time, similar to CDS, thereby improving the "purity" of pixel reads. A variety of experimental approaches to burning in FPN templates, as well as more abstract approaches, do exist today. Non-uniformity noise, often called PRNU or Pixel Response Non Uniformity, is the result of slight variations in the quantum efficiency (QE) of each pixel. QE refers to a pixels ability to capture photons, and is usually rated as a percentage. The Canon 5D III, for example, has a QE of 47%, which indicates it is efficient enough to regularly capture 47% of the photons that reach each pixel. Actual per-pixel QE may vary by +/- a couple percent, which produces another source of noise, as each pixel may not capture the same number of photons as its neighbors despite receiving the same amount of incident light. PRNU changes with sensitivity as well, and this form of noise can become exacerbated as ISO is increased. PRNU can be mitigated by normalizing the quantum efficiency of each pixel, minimizing variation between neighbors and across the entire sensor area. Improvements to QE can be achieved by reducing the gap between photodiodes in each pixel, introduction of one or more layers of microlenses above each pixel to refract non-photodiode incident light onto the photodiode, and the use of backlit sensor technology (which moves a lot or all of the read wiring and transistors behind the photodiode, eliminating the chance that they might obstruct incident photons and either reflect them or convert them to heat energy. ) Thermal noise is noise introduced by heat. Heat is essentially just another form of energy, and it can excite the generation of electrons in a photodiode much like a photon can. Thermal noise is caused directly by the application of heat, often via hot electronic components such as an image processor or ADC. It can be mitigated by thermally isolating such components from the sensor, or by actively cooling the sensor. Finally there is conversion noise, or quantization noise. This type of noise is generated due to inherent inaccuracies during ADC, or analog-to-digital conversion. A non-integral gain (a decimal gain with whole and fractional part) is usually applied to the analog image signal read from the sensor when digitizing an image. Since an analog signal and gain are real numbers, the digital (integral) result of conversion is often inconsistent. A gain of 1 would produce one ADU for every electron captured by a pixel, however a more realistic gain might be 1. 46, in which case you might get 1 ADU per electron in some cases and 2 ADU per electron in other cases. This inconsistency can introduce conversion/quantization noise in the digital output post-ADC. This contribution to noise is pretty low, and produces a fairly fine deviation of noise from pixel to pixel. It is often fairly easy to remove with software noise reduction. The removal of electronic forms of noise has the potential of improving the black point and black purity of an image. The more forms of electronic noise you can eliminate or mitigate, the better your signal to noise ratio will be, even for very low signal levels. This is the major front upon which Sony has made significant progress with their Exmor sensors, which has opened up the possibility of true 14 stop dynamic range with truly stunning shadow recovery. This is also the primary area where many competing sensor fabrication technologies are lagging behind, particularly Canon and medium format sensors. Canon sensors in particular have very high read noise levels, lower levels of QE normalization, lower QE overall, and only use CDS to mitigate dark current noise in their sensors. This results in much lower overall dynamic range, and particularly poor shadow SNR and shadow DR. Once all forms of electronic noise are mitigated to levels where they no longer matter, there will be little manufacturers can do to improve within sensors themselves. Once this point is reached, then the only thing that will really matter from a per-pixel quantum efficiency standpoint is pixel with near-perfect electronic characteristics, we could probably stand pixels sizes considerably smaller than the highest density DSLR sensors today (which would be the Nikon D800 with its 4. 6 micron pixels, the Canon 7D with its 4. 3 micron pixels, and eventually the Nikon D3200 with 3. 8 micron pixels. ) Cell phone sensors use pixels around the 1 micron size, and have demonstrated that such pixels are viable and can produce pretty decent IQ. The same technology in a DSLR could go even farther with maximal noise reduction, so we really do have a long ways to go. Physical Limitations Beyond technological limitations to the perfection of image quality, there are a few physical limitations. The two primary limitations are photon noise and spatial resolution. These are aspects of physical reality, and are things we really don't have much control over. They cannot be mitigated with technological enhancements, and are (and have been) present regardless of the quality of our equipment. Photon noise, or photon shot noise, is a form of noise due to the inherently unpredictable nature of light. At a quantum level we cannot exactly predict what pixel a photon might strike, or how frequently photons might strike one pixel and not another. We can roughly fit photon strikes to a probability curve, but we can never make the fit perfect, so photons from an even light source will never perfectly and evenly distribute over the area of a sensor. This physical aspect of reality produces the bulk of the noise we encounter in our photographs, and amplification of this form of noise by the sensor's amplifiers is the primary reason photos get noisier at higher ISO settings. Lower signal to noise ratios mean there is less total signal range within which to capture and amplify photons, so a higher SNR can help mitigate the effects of photon noise and help us achieve higher ISO ever photon noise itself can not be eliminated, and will always be a limitation on digital camera IQ. Software can play a role in minimizing photon shot noise, and as there is some predictability in light, advanced mathematical algorithms can eliminate the vast majority of this form of noise after a photo has been taken and imported in a RAW format. The only real limitation here would be the quality, accuracy, and precision of the noise reduction software. Spatial resolution is another physical aspect of two dimensional images that we have to work with. Spatial frequencies, or two dimensional waveforms of varying luminosity, are a way of conceptualizing the image projected by a lens and recorded by a sensor. Spatial resolution describes the scale of these frequencies, and is a fixed attribute of an optical system. When it comes to sensors, spatial resolution is a direct consequence of sensor size and pixel density. Spatial resolution is often measured in line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) or cycles per millimeter. The D800 with its 4. 3 micron pixels, or 4912 rows of pixels in 24mm of sensor height, is capable of 102. 33 lp/mm. Intriguingly, the Canon 7D, with its 3456 rows of pixels in 14. 9mm of sensor height, is capable of 115. 97 lp/mm... a higher resolution than the D800. Similarly, the Nikon D3200 with 4000 rows of pixels in 15. 4mm of sensor height will be capable of 129. 87 lp/mm. Both the 7D and D3200 are APS-C, or cropped-frame aller in physical dimensions than the full-frame sensor of the D800. If we were to keep increasing the number of megapixels in a full-frame sensor until they had the same pixel size as the D3200 (3. 8 microns) we could produce a 9351x6234 pixel sensor, or 58. 3mp. We could take this thought to the extreme, and assume it is possible to produce a full-frame DSLR sensor with the same pixel size as the sensor in the iPhone 4 (which is well-known to take some very good photos with IQ that, while not as good as from a DSLR, is more than acceptable), which is 1. 75 microns. That would translate into a 20571x13714 pixel sensor, or 282. 1mp! Such a sensor would be capable of 285. 7 lp/mm spatial resolution, a number that, as you'll see shortly, has limited applicability. The real question is whether such resolution in a DSLR form factor would be beneficial. The answer to that is potentially. The spatial resolution of a sensor represents an upper limit on what the entire camera could be possible of, assuming you had a corresponding lens capable of producing enough resolution to maximize the sensor's potential. Lenses have their own inherent physical limitations on the spatial resolution of the images they project, and those limitations are not vary with aperture, glass quality, and aberration correction. Diffraction is another physical attribute of light that reduces the maximum potential resolution as it passes through an increasingly narrow opening (in the case of a lens, that opening is the aperture. ) Optical aberrations, or imperfections in the refraction of light by a lens, are another physical aspect that reduces the maximum potential resolution. Unlike diffraction, optical aberrations increase as the aperture is widened. Most lenses have a "sweet spot" at which point the effects of optical aberrations and diffraction are roughly equivalent, and the lens reaches its maximum potential. A "perfect" lens is a lens that does not have any optical aberrations of any kind, and is therefor diffraction limited. Lenses often become diffraction limited around roughly f/4. The spatial resolution of a lens is limited by diffraction and aberrations, and as diffraction increases as aperture is stopped down, spatial resolution shrinks with the size of the entrance pupil. At f/4, the maximum spatial resolution of a perfect lens is 173 lp/mm. At f/8, a diffraction limited lens is capable of 83 lp/mm, which is about the same as most full-frame DSLR's (excluding the D800), which range from about 70-85 lp/mm. At f/16 a diffraction limited lens is capable of a mere 43 lp/mm, half the resolution of most full-frame cameras and less than half the resolution of most APS-C cameras. Wider than f/4, for a lens that is still affected by optical aberrations, resolution can quickly drop to 60 lp/mm or less, and as low as 25-30 lp/mm for ultra fast wide angle f/1. 8 or faster primes. Going back to our theoretical 1. 75 micron pixel 282mp FF would be capable of 285 lp/mm spatial resolution. You would need a perfect, diffraction-limited f/2. 4 lens to achieve that much spatial resolution. Such a lens would require extreme aberration correction, greatly increasing cost. Some lenses do exist that can achieve nearly perfect characteristics at even wider apertures (a specialized lens from Zeiss comes to mind that is purportedly capable of about 400 lp/mm, which would require an aperture of about f/1. 6-f/1. 5), however they are rare, highly specialized, and extremely expensive. Its a lot easier to achieve perfection around f/4 (if the last several decades of lens production are any hint), which indicates that the maximum viable, cost-effective resolution for a lens is about 173 lp/mm or a touch less. When we factor in physical limitations into the equation of when the megapixel race will be over, we find that (assuming near technological perfection) the highest cost-effective resolution is about 173 lp/mm. That's about a 103mp full-frame or 40mp APS-C sensor. It should be noted that pushing sensor resolution that high will only see the benefits at an increasingly narrow band of aperture around about f/4, where lens performance is optimal. If the correction of optical aberrations becomes easier, we may be able to achieve higher resolutions, pushing 200 lp/mm, but again, such resolutions would only be possible at or near maximum aperture, where as at all other apertures the overall resolution of your camera will be lower, potentially far lower, than what the sensor itself is capable of. Significantly outresolving the lens leads to perceptual issues, namely the perception that photographs taken at other than the ideal aperture appear soft, lacking sharpness. So when does the megapixel race end? Answering this question is not really something I believe anyone is qualified to answer. Ultimately, its a personal choice, and will depend on a variety of factors. Some photographers may always want the potential that higher resolution sensors can offer at ideal aperture, so long as they are photographing scenes with increasingly fine detail that necessitates such resolution. Other photographers may prefer the improved perception of sharpness that is achieved by improving the characteristics of lower-resolution sensors. For many photographers, I believe the megapixel race has already ended, with around 20mp in a FF DSLR package is more than enough. Further still, many photographers see image quality in an entirely different light, preferring frame rate and the ability to capture more frames continuously at a lower resolution paramount to their success as a photographer. In such cases, its been indicated by many Nikon fans that around 12mp is more than enough so long as they can capture 10 frames a second in sharp clarity. Technologically and physically, there is still a tremendous amount of room to grow and continue making gains in terms of megapixels and resolution. Where the race ends us up to you. The diversity of options on the table has never been higher than today, and you are free to choose the combination of resolution, sensor size, and camera capabilities like AF, ISO, and DR that fit your needs.

But how will he raise the money for the film, when his parents dismiss the scheme as another manic episode? The story of Ned Kelly and his Australian Outlaws was fine the way it was! It was a man who was profiled and treated as a criminal one too many times so he became the criminal and fought against a corrupt government, exposing just how wretched things were. It did not need to be spiced up with Ned being trained to kill at a young age, or any of the other crap that they'll no doubt invent. They even have the GALL to have a 'this is a work of fiction' disclaimer at the beginning. Stupid fucking idiots.

Aaron Fisher’s movie has a strange, inconsistent rhythm that ultimately works as a reflection of its lead character’s manic and depressive states. Credit... Josh Fisher/Sky Island Films Inside the Rain Directed by Aaron Fisher Comedy, Drama, Romance 1h 30m “Inside the Rain” begins as a kind of college caper, although in an unusual location: the student disabilities office. Ben Glass (played by the film’s writer and director Aaron Fisher) is a 20-something film major with bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, A. D. H. D., O. C. and a host of other conditions. This is Ben’s second attempt at college, but it soon goes awry: romantic disappointments end in self-harm, and a misunderstanding threatens to get him expelled. Determined to vindicate himself and stay in school, Ben enlists the help of an aspiring actress and sex worker, Emma (Ellen Toland), to make a short film about his ordeal. Based on Fisher’s own life experiences, “Inside the Rain” switches erratically between comedy and drama while juggling many half-realized plot threads. But the movie’s strange, inconsistent rhythm ultimately works as a reflection of Ben’s manic and depressive states. Fisher’s performance is disarmingly blunt and deadpan, offering an up-close portrait of mental illness as a banal reality (which often involves negotiations with ill-equipped bureaucracy), rather than the stuff of horror or caricature. If “Inside the Rain” transcends clichés in this regard, it succumbs to them in others, especially its portrayal of women. Emma, whom Ben meets when he defends her from lascivious men outside a strip club, is the classic Hooker With a Heart of Gold. She has no compelling qualities outside of her sensuousness and her desire to help Ben. Rosie Perez also gets short shrift as a smack-talking psychiatrist, the actor’s earnest charm undercut — as is the case with many of the film’s performers, Fisher included — by a weak script. Inside the Rain Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

The parents' guide to what's in this movie. The film is meant to create understanding of what it's like to live with bipolar disorder; shows a more realistic portrayal of the psychiatric ward and other psych patients than most Hollywood movies do. Positive Role Models & Representations Ben's mental health diagnoses include bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, and borderline personality disorder; he's portrayed realistically. A sex worker isn't shamed or ostracized for the way she makes money. The main character attempts suicide, and there are references to previous attempts. A patient in a psychiatric unit has scars up and down her wrists from suicide attempts. A group of young men speaks disrespectfully to a young woman; another man intervenes with moments of yelling and threatening posturing. Police roughly handle someone they believe is trying to harm himself. A couple of sex scenes. Bare breasts seen. A porn actress dressed in bondage gear talks dirty to her online audience. A model acts as a naked serving tray for food at a strip club, but no sensitive body parts are shown. Strippers dance suggestively in revealing dresses, but they're not naked. A sexy video is shown in which the model moves in a sultry way while wearing lingerie. Several instances of characters in underwear. Frequent profanity includes "ass, " "bitch, " "blow job, " "cum, " "hell, " "p---y" (implying weakness), "s--t, " "slut, " and many uses of "f--k. " Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Character must take several prescription drugs for his chemical imbalance; he mixes them with hard liquor with no consequences. Later, he intentionally overdoses on the medications in a suicide attempt -- which has far reaching consequences. College students smoke pot and drink alcohol, which sometimes leads to sex. Characters smoke cigarettes and drink wine. Stay up to date on new reviews. Get full reviews, ratings, and advice delivered weekly to your inbox. Subscribe User Reviews There aren't any reviews yet. In INSIDE THE RAIN, Ben Glass ( Aaron Fisher) is adjusting to college life while trying to manage his multiple mental health diagnoses, including bipolar disorder. When a classmate misperceives Ben's heavy medication intake as a suicide attempt, the university administrators kick him out. Outraged at the injustice, Ben sets out to clear his name by making a film that shows his experience. Is it any good? Fisher's feature debut isn't necessarily good, but it's definitely not bad -- and it's also of value. As society continues to realize the need to destigmatize mental health struggles, Inside the Rain is a step in the right direction. Viewers aren't meant to understand exactly what it's like to be bipolar -- it's more like seeing how a friend's bipolar diagnosis affects their life. We see Ben's inability to sleep, his insistence on having all his clothes dry-cleaned (he also has OCD), and how his abrupt way of interacting with others can be off-putting, but the film doesn't put us precisely in his shoes. The film is different than what we're used to from media about the mental health field. Patients in the psychiatric ward aren't incoherent or totally zoned out -- they're just trying to get a handle on what life handed them. Ben's suicide attempt isn't played for tears or sympathy; it's just something he'll come to regret. Rosie Perez co-stars as Dr. Holloway, who's like the Willy Wonka of psychiatrists: With a glint her eye, she gets results by being real. And whether or not Ben heeds her advice is up to him, but if he can use the guidance to make better choices, he'll get the keys to a better life. That said, he ignores her advice when it comes to spending time with Emma ( Ellen Toland), an erotica model who dabbles in porn. Emma allows Ben into her life after he expresses interest in casting her in his film. While a college student struggling with mental health diagnoses and a porn actress might seem to have little in common, they both live without shame or embarrassment for their situations. What they both crave is what the film provides: They want to be taken seriously for who they are and what they want to achieve, not limited by the labels society so easily slaps on them. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about how Emma's career is portrayed in Inside the Rain. The filmmaker believes that sex workers shouldn't be shamed -- how do Hollywood attitudes (positive and negative) on this topic affect our own perspective? What do you think the movie's title means? How does the filmmaker show that? Discuss how Ben/Aaron Fisher use film to try to increase understanding about bipolar disorder. Hi master their tutorials are magnificent, what kind of paper you use. Watch full length retrato chinês movies. Oor: You might be reading this out of order. This one was first, here's the follow up (and conclusion). This chamber is kept at average room temperature, 23 Celsius. The chamber is round like a globe and built on moss covered cobblestones. The floor beneath this pedestal is obscured by several inches of water, and if you were to fall over the protective railings you would awaken from the dreams granted by Book by means of drowning. All around there are unlit candles. This chamber is consecrated every time someone reads the Book, to cleanse the reader of sins they may have committed whilst reading. If you've sinned intentionally in your explorations of the Books contents you weren't aware of it, but its good to have them anyway. They're like a spiritual anchor when they're lit, meant to help you make sense of what is and isn't real upon emerging from the PHV. Call them Maria's outstretched hand, call them plain old smelling salts, but they ease your shell shocked brain. The Book itself is not a book, but rather four very strange lights in each cardinal direction. Given that this building faces diagonally away from the north, they're not aligned the way you would expect them to be. When you step onto the gently glowing platform in the center of the pedestal, your body is held in place by an unseen force until you either jerk yourself away out of it by your will alone or the Book is closed. Upon the touching of the glowing platform, the lights on all sides of the room begin to spin very slowly and increase in speed, eventually traveling so fast they blur together. When they're this fast they too light up, light blue, and the world floods with information. You see the Book's index, a glowing display marked with letters and numbers. Eventually these are cycled in a predetermined manner alien to you and you see the page that says WILLKOMMEN in blocky capital letters you can only barely read. Without moving, you decide on the floating brick of text reading 'Unser Auftrag' and select from an option from another page of the book. The first in line is You know not what a PHV is though you have some idea that Ozymandias hated them and did all he could to rid himself of them, but you know naturally to select it. You are prepared to read Unser Auftrag. From the depths of what your soul you are ready. The PHV plays. The lights around you stop spinning deep blue and numbers and numbers and letters. Instead it spins greens, browns, blues, blacks, silvers... unserauftrag ABSPIELEN You are Ogden de Soya, proud to serve in the Survey Corps the 101st Unit under Commander Tritan in the year of our ladies 847. You and your unit are deep past Maria now, maybe even bordering what they called the Sea if your Commander will dare take you that far into the countryside. You're tracking the big one. Fucking huge this guy is. Tracks indicate a 17 meter, and that's the biggest you've ever even heard of. Old timers talk about the thirty meters from the old world, but that was then and this is now. The biggest you've ever seen was just over ten meters. You creep through the underbrush covering your scents with mud. In this where and when that's the only thing that really works to keep you safe, the thick trees and the mud facials. Your Team Leader, man named Solomon, spots something. He raises his hand and flicks his finger forward, 'group up. ' You all gather around and one by one he beckons each of you to have a glimpse through the trees he's found. He points and makes the same motion, pointing out through the trees into the distance. There the big bastard is. Easily 17 or more meters and strangely covered in fur like a dog. He's exploring an abandoned mining town. Now and then he casts his gaze yonder towards Wall Maria. You don't like the way he's looking at it. Its not the usual dull grin of a titan sniffing out prey but something greater. Those eyes betray hate, accentuated by his wrinkled lip. You are so captivated by his eyes that you fail to notice the shifting in the muscles of his legs and back that signal he's about to turn in your direction. Your TL throws his arm around your neck and pulls you backwards and throws you on the ground. " What part of get down did you not understand Corporal? Ready for combat boys. " You scramble to full height and you all simultaneously attach pairing swords to your triggers and draw, at the same time choosing flight vectors through the trees. You hear his pounding footsteps from across the field through the streets of the mining town towards your tree line. Doesn't matter how much hair he's got, if he's walking straight into a treeline hiding a half dozen Corpsmen he's doomed. The forest is practically your natural habitat. "When he's close enough, Siegfried, Roberta, and de Soya will go left. Holmes, Hatter, and Malkovich go right. I'll blind him, Holmes and Siegfried will go for straight cuts left and right, half second delay. " For the next fifteen seconds, this entire team is one big spring load bear trap for the doomed 17 meter freak of nature. He's taking on six of you. He's going to die and you're all one assist and change closer to promotions. He takes the last step and you all come flying out of the forest. Siegfried, Roberta, and yourself fly left, you in the lead at the bottom and Siegfried in the back of the formation at the very top on an axis with the upper part of the beasts neck. Holmes, Hatter, and Malkovich are in the exact same formation on the right side, Holmes at the top ahead of Hatter and Malkovich. That way Holmes will cut first at the lower half of the neck, his men will fly past the beast and knick its shin and ass, and Siegried will follow up with the cut at the high up mark and you and Roberta will give it little goodbye kisses before it turns into a puff of smoke in the wind. None of that happens. Instead the beast catches Holmes' line and throws him away like a paper cup at a party. He goes sailing into the distance on that momentum and you can faintly make out a little blotchy red line where his vitals are leaking out of his mouth. A split second after that you've crossed the beasts ankles and he brushes you aside violently. You cartwheel into a field. All he has to do to kill Malkovich and Hatter is bring his leg into their way. You hear them turn into red splotches on his shin and thigh. Meanwhile on his other leg, the motion of the movement has no doubt jerked Roberta and Siegfried, who came just after you, around like ragdolls. When you glance up, Roberta's limbs have all snapped backwards at unnatural angles and he flies into town dead while Siegfried's uncontrolled momentum sends him crashing into the ground, where the beast stomps him into the earth viciously. Its been about seven seconds. You hurt worse than you've ever heart before. Everything is broken, probably a lot of internal bleeding. If you somehow ever managed to survive this, you'd be passing blood for weeks. You hear him walking towards you. Suddenly he's right above you, damn legs must carry him fast like a grasshopper. He grins at you. He really grins. You close your eyes. "What are these weapons? ".. You must have said as much. Your eyes go wide and you see him again. "The one on your hips that allows you to jump about I mean. " His voice echoes across the fields and through the forest. You hear it resonate within the mine shafts. "Funny, I thought we spoke the same language. Some kind of homogenized Germanic conlang facilitated by the aristocracy I thought. " You stare blankly at the speaking titan. You've forgotten all about how much your body hurts. "Or perhaps you're so frightened that you can't speak? " With all the strength your arms can summon you draw a sword. You won't die hallucinating, you want to go with dignity and raise your blade one last time. "I see, that almost looks like a sword. Then you have no idea what is in our necks? " "D-d-doesn't matter. All the same to me. " "Mmm. More or less. You can speak then? Entertain me. How does this little contraption on you work? " He gently bends down and nudges the blade reservoir on your hip with his fingernail. "Government keeps it a s-s-s-secret. Only know how to field strip and clean, not fix. " " Really? Wonder why they'd do that? Oh well. Pleasure meeting you. " He toddles off one lumbering gargantuan step at a time and you feel the sun hit your face from where his body blocked it. It is hot like the sun on you like an August dry heat. "All yours boys. Enjoy. " Three titans you hadn't noticed swarm around you and you can see the misery on their faces. They were like dogs waiting for you to pour the kibble in their bowls during this whole affair. They creep closer from all sides now, circling around you. "WAIT! " you cry. The titan ignores you. "I'M MARRIED DAMN IT! " "Me too. " his voice bellows back across the horizon. "I CAN FIND OUT! " He stops in his tracks. "About the weapons you mean? " "..! Yes about the weapons! Whatever you want! Just let me live! " ".. down children. We've made a new friend. " The titans moan in unison and back off. The beast wanders back towards you and brushes the lesser titans away with the heel of his foot in a gesture that would be considered either adorable or abusive if he were humans and they were young children. "You can do more. " He picks you up and the world loses focus, drains of colors, twists and contorts. The world has lost consistency in its entirety. The treeline and silhouetted mining outpost and the monsters are all opaque and you can just barely make out the real world, the one of a hallowed chamber and blinking lights. YOUR head begins to pound and you can hear everything, even things you should not be able to. A snapped twig is like a crack of lightning. Rushing water may as well be some kind of cataclysmic Ragnorok-esque event. The real you, the one who is not Ogden de Soya in 847, begins to scream in utter agony, the sound of which echoes in the chamber around you and reverberates wildly in the halls of your mind in a feedback loop of misery. There are footsteps splashing through water. Father Bishop enters the frame, his feet splashing through earth and often at odds with the geometry observed by de Soya's lolling shaking vision. It's like he's walking at 20 or 30 degree vectors on a path that should take him through the earth itself. This phenomenon heaves your stomach and throws your mind for a loop. " Breathe Initiate. " You try, but damn it its hard. Ozymandias is somehow firing every synapse in de Soya's head at once, filling it with junk data. He must be trying to keep people like you from observing this scene. The Father splashes his way back into your nightmare again. In real time you feel a damp cloth brush your head. "A kind of interference. Something he did with his ape body that even we don't kin with our more advanced understanding of old world playthings. Our ancestors confusingly likened it to 'snow upon a tell of vision', if that helps at all. You can pull through if you try. " Have others pulled through this segment of Unser Auftrag and lived to tell about it? You have the sneaking suspicion that those people are fed intravenously and communicate by tapping; 'once for no, two for yes', but you're apparently a prodigy at the navigation of these things, so you grit your teeth and try very hard not to cry. Whatever Ozymandias and de Soya discuss, whether or not de Soya is awake and paying attention or hearing it subliminally in a screaming dream the way you are, you do not know. It goes on for something like half an hour. You come to on a horse. Things are mostly back to normal, but light, sound, and space are still not completely synced. Your horse is as fast as a shooting star. The Walls approach you as if theyare aberrant titans coming to gobble you and horsey up. The sensory input is too much and you black out now that you don't have anything else to prove, although you suspect its actually Ogden that blacks out and you are only playing the part. The next weeks are a blur. You are a decorated veteran, only survivor of the expedition. Your wife stays with you long enough to make you stop drooling and then goes to stay with her mother and think about things. Your parents have you over for dinner in Trost, and for a while it goes smooth, but nothing can clean you of the survivalists taint in their eyes. As far as you know, your meeting with the beastly titan went unrecorded by the authorities. Nevertheless you are becoming paranoid. The opiate addiction you succumbed to while in intensive care does nothing to help the situation, in fact exacerbating it to nearly hallucinogenic levels. You see the beasts face in mirrors for a split second, wake up on the floor, walk over about four times as many cold spots as you ever did before. When your flat groans in its foundation, when the wind howls through the chimney, when the fog roles over Karanese, you feel his gaze on the back of your neck and know that his will for you is not yet done. Because talking to that thing, its hands or paws or whatever still spattered in the organs of your friends, was equivocally selling your soul to the devil himself. You made a deal for your survival, and all you can do is speculate when that debt comes due. There's a monkey on your back as the saying goes. One day you pass a doomsday shouter on your through Karanese, coming back from a days stint with a temp agency waiting tables, going to see your guy who knows a guy. He's preaching about the end of the world like they always are, except now he's got a literal cult following. Back in the day, wandering Karanese, this guy was like every other Wallist in the country. Ever since you were a kid you can remember the way you and the people in your circles looked down on nutters like these. The Goddesses were not pleased, repent, purchase an indulgence today and so on and so forth. Then one day the world really did almost end. One Spring day in 845 in District of Shigansina, he sent his Colossal and Armored Titans to destroy humanity. Were it not for some very quick work on behalf of the Rosean governors, Parliament, and the Garrison, it would have been curtains for the whole damn human race. The event that launched a generation of youths into the state military to fight back, and you were one of them. Now you are disillusioned with that idea of 'taking the fight to them', but that hasn't stopped anybody else. The second consequence of the Fall of Shigansina was the meteoric rise of guys just like this on street corners with their sandwich board suits inscribed with new renditions of the ten commandments. They've been doing pretty gosh darn well in light of the influx of Marians into Rose. When the state couldn't get enough crops growing and tents built to stop a locust-like phenomenon from eating up major cities, they turned towards the Wall Cult. It turned out they had stockpiled resources for years ahead of time to prevent calamities such as this from causing an utter breakdown. That was when King Wilhelm and Parliament decided to take the sandwich board gospel a little more seriously. So if they could feed and house random displaced assholes still bitching two years on about the loss of their oxen and yams or whatever, they could probably spare a little extra for you. What was that saying? Something something opiate of the masses? In 848 your life has changed. You never realized how closely you came to eternal damnation. Your turnaround has been monumental. Before, you were crying into your cereal every morning, sleeping on the couch hallucinating about some kind of primate monster watching your every move, pleading with your wife to come back and love you, getting truly wasted to keep the nightmares at bay. You began your conversation with what you were thinking of as a con artist that day by asking if he had any work. That was supposed to just be a temporary job to churn up enough cash to for the next hit. He told you to come back later that evening during a sermon (dozens of losers sitting there Indian style on the street corner blocking carriages trying to get their Shangri-La on, what a bunch of jokers right? ) and you came back full up on your vice hoping they would just hand you a bowl of carrot stew and let you roll off on your merry. But no, bastards made you work for it! Their condition for dolling you out some stew was that you return the favor for those dopes on the street and dole them some stew. And, because god damn it everybody's got a paternal instinct, the faces of starving children that had once lived honestly on homesteads in Maria killed you. In their eyes you saw something you'd forgotten what it looked like. They looked at you with real hope, reverence. You in your dirty apron with a bent out of shape tin dipper and mystery meat stew... you were angelic to them. No one had ever looked at you like that save for the first time you were involved in an expedition after Shigansina during that wave of patriotic fervor in which people still thought it was possible to re-take the third Wall. The next day you quietly insinuated yourself into the cult gathering around the sandwich board preacher and this time instead of work or food, you used the word 'help' without meaning to. His eyes lit up at you, like he knew he'd caught you like a fish. It was all... 'downhill' was the wrong word, uphill didn't quite do the cleansing of a mind and body justice. But things got better so quickly your head spun. You were for those next months harmonized with the ebb and flow of God's will. Your speech patterns softened and people started calling you brother. You had a family thoroughly unlike your bitch of a mother and father, whom you would never disappoint. By Jove you even caught yourself hymning and making beads into tacky jewelry to sell at a bake sale at one point. You start becoming involved in the politics of the church in 849. Your perspective as a cast off veteran, recovering alcoholic and drug addict, and former atheist is much appreciated at round table meetings. It is then, once you have acquired a modicum of respect and authority within the structure of the church, that you see his face in the mirror again. Nothing stops your rage at that point, and you've broken most of the wooden furniture in your apartment before you calm down. That night you fall asleep on the couch in the frock your tore apart in your rampage, wasted on some real hard shit you hadn't touched in nearly a year and change. It is time to pay your dues, and this time there will be no recovering unless you do so. You'll sink back into that pit of hopelessness and grievance where you're strange and nobody knows your name again, and this time it'll be permanent. You'll choke to death on bile in a ditch. Much like for the Wall Church, you must pay an indulgence to Lord Ozymandias if you want to remain sane and live a happy life. In your dreams he reaches out. You can't tell if he's actually sitting down for a communion with you out in the wastes somewhere or if this is all stuff he left in your head last time, set to go off the moment you were in a position of usefulness. That night you walk with him through a verdant garden in Karanese, reclaimed by nature. Small animals skitter up and down trees, while the large ones sip languidly from pond where there should have been a bakery. "Karanese is beautiful, isn't it? " The skeptic in you says no, that this is all unnatural bullshit. The Goddess fearing man in you agrees wholeheartedly. "But this is not the way of things, is it Ogden? " No you think. That pond actually outputs hundreds of donuts a day. The treeline is actually the Military Complex. "But we can make it beautiful Ogden! As nature intended! " You can! It is as the book says! "That which is called progress encourages extravagance. " Yes. "That which is called civilization devastates the spirit of man! " Yes! "That which is called science perverts providence! " Yes! It is as the good book said! The ancients abandoned the thinking machines and the steel horses whence the titans came! It was their salvation! Man must live simply in harmony with nature! "Yes Ogden! " Man approaches that extravagance! The Roseans distance themselves from the suffering of the Marians as you once did! "You must equalize them all Ogden! " How? HOW? Ozymandias, King of Kings, grins. "The Gates my son. " Every ideology has a radical element you suppose, and the Wall Church has at least two or three after one hundred years as the most successful religion in human history. Some of them like to capture and kill non-believers. Some of them trade in slaves. Some of them were far worse. Its much easier to justify it that way. In 850 you are granted a preaching license and begin a different kind of sermon in smaller circles. You are devilishly good at it too, real energy pours into your word and your followers pay attention. In your gospel you try to convey the general impermanence of things, something you think Ozymandias would endorse for some reason intangible to you. Nothing lasts for ever. We are made of stardust or sea foam and to stardust or sea foam we shall one day return, so you say. The Walls are a 3D manifestation of fourth dimensional Goddesses who choose to take shape long enough to help humanity survive the onslaught of titans and one day they shall dissipate and return to their realm while their bones rot into nothingness. Its a strange sort of nihilistic idea but it picks up steam. It has its roots in the actual teachings of the Wallists, who do believe much the same but don't stress it. The key difference is that only a few people have the luxury of attending your speeches. People you trust. And those people begin to make the foundations of your conspiracy to destroy Karanese. The problem is that Karanese is well defended by not only the Garrison but the Survey Corps itself. It is after the rioting of 852 where the Survey Corps stopped some of your brothers from storming the gate that your fellow Churchgoers begin to question your teachings. An inquisition makes a brief appearance but you brush them off like mosquitoes with calm reassurances. You sweet talk so well that nobody can possibly connect you to the incident. Two weeks later you have manipulated things in Karanese to turn one Commander on another. Connor Adams only needs an excuse at this point to turn on his fellows. When the time is right, you send a note that can only be read with your own cypher telling your brothers to kill the nightwatchmen that man the gates and open the gate of Karanese. All of Rose will be pacified and returned to nature as the Goddesses intended. One day so will Wall Sina. Your debt will soon be repaid. You wake up in a dark place in 853, upside down, held to the ceiling by a length of rope and gagged. Your fingers are missing. You've been burned in places. You persist on little tins of water and paper plates of some indeterminable shit packed with just enough nutrients to allow you to live a little longer. You have lost track of time completely. All for the efforts of Tritan. At least in the end you know Adams did kill him. The door opens and your captors enter. The Bishops of Maria, Rose, and Sina, as well as the master of the dungeons. One of them speaks to you, something about being ready to divulge your plans. All you can do is mutter the names of the damned. The ones that stopped you. " Tritan, Friday, Hauer, Shade... "ENOUGH! I'm busy, so if he has anything useful to say we better hear it quickly. At that the dungeon master brandishes a pair of pliers. " Schulz, Mayer, Fyer... " The dungeon master begins to do things to you. You're getting a little used to the pain, but he's an inventive motherfucker if ever there was one. " B-B-Beaumont... R-Roberts... lverman... " "Perhaps I should sew his mouth shut sirs? " All three bishops object. By virtue of shotgun jury democratic vote they agree that you are no longer useful in your nearly catatonic state. All you've done in the time you've been in this cell being picked to bits by these men is repeat the names of the soldiers that stopped you in Karanese. A prayer to Ozymandias to administer justice. The next day you are brought into a brightly lit room and laid out on a metal slab. You are slid wholesale underneath some kind of metallic contraption with a lot of needles and wires attached. It begins to shine a very bright light into your eyeballs. Someone injects you with something and you rapidly lose yourself in dreams. You dream of the last five or so years. You relive the moment when your comrades were killed by Lord Ozymandias and then your subsequent meeting with him. You relive those horrible months in which you were a lost soul, devoid of purpose. You relive working in the soup kitchen for the sandwich board pastor and making a difference in those lives. You relive smashing your apartment apart when the visions return. You relive writing an encrypted note to your followers. You relive when the Beast Titan (the one that is not your Lord Ozymandias but some kind of Interloper) smashes through the Complex and the soldiers turn the tide of the battle. You relive being tortured just a few days ago. You relive right up to now, being slid up under this thing and made to sleep. Hours later the dungeon master walks into your cell casually and cuts your throat. You die envisioning his visage and the faces of those children you fed when you thought life still had purpose. "I could go into depth on the threats posed by Ozymandias, but I am nowhere near as poignant as the authors of Unser Auftrag. " says Father Bishop as you wring the flesh of your neck to ensure that, yes, there is no gash there. You manage to get down a bottle of herbal tea freakishly fast while he talks. "What you've just seen was the first addition to the Book since its creation long ago when the Prophetess built the Walls. Fairly recent history at that. It showcases the way he manipulates people. With minimum interference he corrupted the yet unwritten pages of the Book and implanted ideas in de Soya's mind that had a will of their own. But... I forget myself. As I told you, the pages ahead are the last ones you must read, though they are by no means the end of the Book. " What? What did that mean? Where there others? The options in the menu only explicitly point to four memories, some of which are split into pieces. Your confused expression is noted by the Father. "There is... one more chapter of the Book. The T-Y-2-K. It is inaccessible to all but the Readers, none of which has ever opened it. It is meant to be read during the end times either if Ozymandias is defeated in battle or dies of entropy. When you finish Unser Auftrag very soon now, you will be a Reader, the first in a long time. At that point the choice is yours. " You nod. The only way to access the TY2K would be to finish Unser Auftrag. You brace yourself. unserauftrag ABSPIELEN This is not like the other chapters of the Book. You feel that immediately in your gut. The other chapters begin with a loss of self as you enter the mind and thoughts of another person. When you were reading about those people, you were those people, Mr. and Mrs. Straus, the nameless Warrior, Ogden de Soya. If those chapters were a first hand account of a great war, this is a theatrical performance of the war prefaced with a theatre major telling the audience that it is 'based on a true story'. Its evident visually as well, the others were clouded by the limitations of human perception. Sights and sounds were marred by peripheral bias. The Warrior didn't hear the titan that kicked him across the field because he was awestruck by the Colossal Titan ahead of him, for instance. There is serious production value in what you are shown. It starts with a fade in to ultra high resolution footage of the ruins of a major city. The voice of Mrs. Straus speaks, and her voice work is professional. She has rehearsed this. " Circa 2100, a grand civilization collapsed. " Shot after shot of smouldering cities. Mountains of dead people. The treads of some bloody great machine rolling over a human skull and crushing it like a cereal puff. Wars on a scale you never imagined. "The exact causes are unknown to us. Currently its thought to have been a culmination of dozens, perhaps hundreds of factors. It was a time of great innovation and also great societal devastation. Industrial byproducts were destroying the earth, countries fought over land and wealth, there were far, far too many people and not nearly enough space or resources, and finally they used their worst weapons to eradicate each other. Other scholars suggest advances in thinking machinery or contact with extraterrestrial life, but these are highly unlikely. Footage of a cylindrical metal tube cresting a wave of fire out of a silo is shown to you. There are huge storms of grey dust that eats all that it touches and renders the land nearly flat and completely dead. "Society in the most populous parts of the world collapsed and would not be able to reestablish itself for nearly four hundred years. The survivors scavenged the miraculous technologies and foodstuffs of the old world and fought viciously to keep them. The next shot is of one group of men attacking another group with spears and stones, graduating to peculiar handguns and rifles, and worse. "In the 400s, one so called chateau tribe established dominance in the place called Europe and united the peoples there into one nation with the goal of surpassing the height of the old world. This was the line of Wilhelm. " A man in a sharp black suit sitting at a conference table stroking his thick mustache and looking at a blue wireframe projection of something indistinguishable, perhaps a plan for a city or some topographical map. The next shot is of Ian Wilhelm, who has inherited his forbears mustache, viewing a very similar projection of Wall Sina which will become the seat of his families power. Then his granddaughter Queen Anya on the throne in Mitras. "They succeeded in rallying like minded individuals into restoring the European mainland and parts around the world to much of their former glory. It was an incredible era in human history. " Heinlein Wilhelm shaking hands with the Trade Minister of the Northern British Kingdom upon making peace. A family portrait of the Wilhelms circa 660 PCE including not one but five CEOs of various Korean and Chinese bunker tribes. "In 620s the Wilhelms occupied much of South America under the pretense of revitalization. What they encountered was a similar minded city-state of heavily armed indigenous peoples that were already rallying their neighbors to do much the same thing across the Americas. This was the first time Europe under Wilhelm met a power capable of challenging them. Peace could not be easily made and a war broke out. The war itself is one we consider insignificant when compared to truly ancient wars like the World Wars, the Collapse, the Trojan War, or Alexander's conquests. It is simply that it was the first war between two new nations that disturbed so many people. They had never experienced war on such scale. " There is an array of ditches and trenches where, on one side, Brazilian fighter pilots fire coil weapons en masse at European zeppelins, the event that apparently sparked the war. "Wilhelmist Europe was not made for war. Its policies shifted drastically to allow for the development of weapons technologies that had been lost for centuries. Some you saw in the previous PHVs, such as flechettes and flash forged blades. As the hostility in this silly conflict grew and the Wilhelms lost control over their people's nationalism, private corporations funded their own solutions. One of which was the research of Dr. Johannes Straus, my husband. " "To quickly end the war with the South Americans, he created the titans, artificial beings that could rearrange the matter around them into large bodies built for war. These are the creatures you no doubt live in fear of daily in your time Reader, but know that in our time they were used for greater things. The same footage of Straus viewing the seeder hauling a wrecked tank to a recycling plant is played. "If you have viewed the PHVs up to this point there's no need for me to go into details about the events themselves. The world ended again but one last act of unity shared by all peoples allowed us to build one structure that could withstand the advancing titans. What they really want me to record is this... You need to know about my husband. When I knew him, he was Jo Straus. He was a sweet man, doting father, and a devoted husband. I don't know when the change occurred, but he lost his mind. " Footage showing the man himself cheerfully playing the piano with his daughter, submerged in a glass tube filled with luminescent green fluid, holding his outstretched hand to gingerly shake the pinkie finger of a four meter titan, then finally footage of his titan body striding through a forest as seen from atop the Wall itself. "He orchestrated the downfall of the human race and took the title of Ozymandias. Since then he has divided his time between attempting to breach these Walls, hunting for other bastions of humanity outside, and running experiments with what little resources left to him. Thankfully he no longer has access to the retrovirus and will never create another abomination again. " A voice from behind the camera (which comes eerily from behind you) calmly interrupts. "Ma'am, the PHV player doesn't process this kind of codec very well so its best if we keep this short. Can you tell us about Ozymandias' great weakness? " "Certainly. " She clears her throat. "Prolonged exposure to the earliest strains of the titan retrovirus rapidly degrades the central nervous system of titans. Its the difference between normal titans and shifters. The shifters maintain their sentience and never allow the titan body to get the better of them, while the other titans are people who could not seperate themselves from their titan bodies. They lose their minds and can't stop themselves after a point. As dangerous as they are, without the influence of Ozymandias to steer them into attacking people, they are simple animals. The only desire they have is to satiate themselves and sleep during the night. This means that there is a solution. "TY2K is a protocol that authorizes the Reader to carry out what you might call the third great collapse of human civilization, though its probably less ominous than that makes it sound. If the Reader accesses TY2K, it should be because the situation in which victory over Ozymandias has either been achieved or rendered impossible, meaning that humanity is either ready to recolonize the planet or must flee to another location. Once triggered, there's no going back. It is either a victory condition or a loss condition, but in the end the distinction between the two lies in the hands of the Reader and the people he or she surrounds themselves with. " "Thus the final chapter of the Book is addressed to our descendants circa 2700 Post Common Era. If Ozymandias by chance breaches the Walls and threatens the human race to such an extent that he can not be killed by the nation's three military branches, the decision to awaken the Mauerarchitektur titans lies with the Reader, whoever he or she may be. Kimberly Straus giggles girlishly, the kind of sound you would think her old body shouldn't be able to produce anymore. "It almost sounds like the Osterhagen Key from those ancient Pre Collapse sci-fi soaps. Did you ever watch Doctor Who, mister Paxton? " The camera man says no, he's never even heard of it. Kimberly shakes her head. "But anyway, that is who we are. We're the protectors of the Walls. It's up to us whether we want to use our parabolic Osterhagen Key or not. All we have to do to survive as a people is wait for my husband to die in the wasteland and then the titans will be leaderless. That's what the Walls were built for and I pray that they last that long. If you're watching this, you're a part of our legacy in the future, the last and best hope for us all. Whether or not you read the final chapter of this so called 'book' is your choice. We entrust you to make the best decisions and safeguard our children and grandchildren. " She pauses for a moment. "Is that everything Mr. Paxton? " "Yes Ms. Straus, that's it. " The video ends. No headache or vomit or tears this time, the lights just shut off and spin down.

This needs to be a Movie like on god

Wait! This movie is not being protested or banned? Hmmm🤔 UNPLANNED sure had a hard time. Let's play fair y'all 🧐. A comment below says this is an 'ordinary movie. No, its a film about ordinary people, but its a special film. Fans: Videos aren't long enough! Afro: Don't go to sleep tonight. We are delighted to welcome director Eliza Hittman for a discussion about her new film, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and her already rich body of work. In Never Rarely Sometimes Always —winner of a Special Jury Award at Sundance and Berlin—17-year-old Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) journeys to New York City with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) to seek an abortion. “Hittman’s feeling for adolescence is extremely intuitive, and her approach—in It Felt Like Love, Beach Rats, and now Never Rarely Sometimes Always —is not abstract, sentimental, or intellectual. She is not tempted by melodrama or polemic. Her interest is sensorial and experiential: it’s all about textures and faces, behaviors and silences, how destabilized everything is when you’re young and hormonal and inexperienced... She’s in the thick of it with her teenage characters. ” (Sheila O’Malley, Film Comment March/April 2020). Online RSVPs will open on March 13 at noon. Skip the box office by showing your print-at-home ticket (printed or on your mobile device) to the theater usher. You must show up at least 30 minutes in advance or your seat may be forfeited. Please note: Walk-ups will still be accepted; tickets to be distributed on a space-available basis.
